Instructions

Objective

Practise fundamental Attracting skills by sharing dreams or fantasies about the future.

Explore dream life as a potential source of personal power.

Planning (10 minutes maximum)

Make sure you have an Exercise Review Set from your Participant Workbook. You will need the Personal Learning Journal to complete this exercise.

Take a few minutes to make contact with your personal dreams about the future. Give full rein to your imagination. Think about your work and life. Imagine where you might be and what you might be doing five years from now, a year from now, even next month! Try to think concretely, in sensory images, if that helps you.

Then, if you wish, take a minute or two to jot down any images you wish to remember and share with others.

Exercise (30 minutes maximum)

One group member volunteers by sharing his or her dreams. The dreams may be of a distant future, an upcoming possibility, or even a daydream of the moment.

The other group members will be responders. They should listen actively, encourage the speaker, and facilitate the speaker’s sharing.

Responders might use the phrases:

  • “Tell me about your dreams….”
  • “What do you see…?”
  • “What do you wish for…?”

The speaker might use the phrases:

  • “I dream about (being, becoming, doing)….”
  • “I can see myself….”
  • “I hope for….”

The speaker should share personal dreams about the future, no matter how wild or silly they might sound. Allow yourself to express even the most impractical dreams.

Take your time, paint the picture, try to describe the dream to others as it appears to you.

Switch roles until each group member has shared his or her dreams.

Review (20 minutes maximum)

Discuss your experience in the exercise. Use the questions below to help you organise your discussion.

As Dreamer:

  • Do you have many dreams about the future? Is it easy or difficult for you to freely express your fantasies?
  • How did you feel about sharing your dreams with others in this exercise? How was this experience similar to or different from your real life experience?
  • What did you do while sharing your dreams that seemed to engage your partner’s interest and enthusiasm?
  • What did the listener do that affected your willingness or ability to share your dreams?
  • Do you consider dreaming to be a source of goals and a preparation for action, or a substitute for reality? What do you think contributes to this perception?
  • How might you use dreaming to increase your personal power and influence?

As Listener:

  • How involved, caught up, or drawn in were you by the other person’s dream? What did your partner do that increased your interest or enthusiasm?
  • Can you identify ways that you might help other people to dream, fantasise, hope for more, and achieve more of whatever it is they dream about?

At the end of the session take time to record useful feedback and learning in your Journal (5 minutes)
